Irises
Vincent van Gogh
Irises (1890) by Vincent van Gogh shows a group of bright blue and purple flowers growing close together. The painting uses strong outlines and thick brushstrokes, which make the flowers feel lively and full of movement. Van Gogh painted this while staying in a mental health asylum, and many people think the careful study of nature helped him feel calmer. This artwork is another example of Post-Impressionism and shows how van Gogh used color and texture to express emotion rather than paint realistically.

Shimomeguro
Katsushika Hokusai
Shimomeguro, also known as Lower Meguro, is one of the beautiful landscape prints from Katsushika Hokusai’s famous Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series, created around 1830-1832 in Japan during the Edo period. Hokusai used the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock print technique, carving his design into blocks of wood and printing with ink and color on paper to build up layers of tone and texture. In this scene, he shows rural life with tiny figures and houses nestled in rolling hills, while Mount Fuji rises delicately in the distance, giving a sense of calm and harmony between people and nature. The composition leads your eye from the nearby landscape toward the distant mountain, showing how Hokusai combined careful observation with artistic imagination to turn everyday scenery into a timeless work of art.

Roses
Vincent van Gogh
Roses by Vincent van Gogh is a still life painting from 1890 that shows a full bouquet of roses arranged in a simple vase. At first glance, the colors seem soft and calming, mostly pale greens and creamy whites, but originally the roses were actually a brighter pink that faded over time. Van Gogh painted this work near the end of his life while he was staying at an asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, and it reflects a quieter, more peaceful mood compared to some of his more dramatic paintings. Even though the subject is simple, the brushstrokes are energetic and visible, which gives the flowers movement and texture. Instead of blending everything smoothly, he layered thick paint to make the bouquet feel alive and expressive. Today, the painting is part of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it stands as an example of how Van Gogh could turn an ordinary subject into something emotional and powerful through color and brushwork.
