Van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses is an oil painting of a sun-soaked wheat field with tall, dark cypress trees rising against a bright sky. The cypresses stand like vertical accents that break the landscape’s horizontals. Van Gogh painted this in 1889 while living at a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France. Even though he struggled with his health, he was inspired by the beautiful Provençal countryside — especially the cypress trees, which he described as being like “a splash of black in a sunny landscape.” He told his brother Theo that this was one of his best summer landscapes.
