Van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses is an oil painting of a sun-soaked wheat field with tall, dark cypress trees rising against a bright sky. Notice wide horizontal bands of golden wheat, patches of green from olive trees, and an energetic sky filled with swirling clouds. The cypresses stand like vertical accents that break the landscape’s horizontals. Van Gogh painted this in 1889 while living at a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France. Even though he struggled with his health, he was inspired by the beautiful Provençal countryside — especially the cypress trees, which he described as being like “a splash of black in a sunny landscape.” He told his brother Theo that this was one of his best summer landscapes.
